Aluminium And Steel Security Doors

The first house I bought had bare floors that had seen better days, so I started looking at flooring options with the view that one type of flooring would suit my whole home. I chose pine flooring for every room, and that was a costly mistake. Pine is a softwood, and it didn't hold up well in busy traffic areas. I decided to learn more about different types of flooring that are available before parting with more money, and I started this blog to share what I learned and provide new homeowners with some tips for choosing the right flooring for each room in their home. I hope you find my blog useful.

Aluminium And Steel Security Doors

If you've recently researched security doors, you will have noticed that some are constructed from aluminium, some from steel, and others from a combination of the two. So, what is the difference between these metals?

Aluminium

The primary qualities of aluminium are that it is anti-corrosive and durable. It begins with the mining of bauxite and the extracting of alumina. This element is then combined with other ingredients to create aluminium. Different substances within an aluminium mix produce metals with specific qualities; duralumin is one example central to aeroplane manufacture.

With respect to security doors, being anti-corrosive is a big plus. Aluminium oxide naturally forms on the surface of any aluminium object, and this provides a permanent anti-rust film. So, aluminium is ideal even for coastal regions filled with salty sea air.

Extruded And Cast Aluminium

Often aluminium is fitted within the door using different means. For example, a door might have an extruded outer frame, and a die-cast inner grille section. These terms just refer to various manufacturing methods. Extruded aluminium is a process whereby metal is forced through a machine to produce its particular form. Cast aluminium is the result of a different method; the metal is melted and then poured into a shaping mould.

Steel

Some security doors include both aluminium and steel parts. For example, the outer frame could be aluminium and mesh steel. Alternatively, the door may be entirely formed from steel.

Steel is an alloy mixture that contains iron and carbon, combined with other metals such as chromium and manganese. One form of steel, stainless steel, is comprised of less iron and more chromium (from 10 to 30 per cent). The primary attribute of steel is that it is extremely strong, though different grades are produced that are more or less sturdy. While carbon steel does rust, stainless steel is anti-corrosive because its chromium content prevents rust. Regardless, steel can be protected with a galvanising process. This involves dipping the metal into a bath of molten zinc. After the object is removed, the zinc film provides a permanent anti-rust layer.

Powder Coating

Security doors, aluminium or steel, are commonly powder coated. This treatment gives the door an attractive coloured finish which also doubles as an extra protective coat. The metal is sprayed with a dry mix of electrostatically-charged pigments and resins that cling to its surface. The article is then baked, and the dry coating melts around the metal producing a smooth, decorative, coloured finish.

When it comes to security doors, both aluminium and steel are excellent materials. Their primary attributes lie in different areas though. While steel is famed for its strength, aluminium is renowned for its naturally anti-corrosive powers.
